About the author: Dr Denise Gossage
My story starts exactly where you are now, taking my GCSEs and A-levels, coming up to exams, wondering how to do my best.
I went to school to collect my results on Results Day. I remember the anxiety and excitement bubbling in the air as pupils piled into the hall. There was a mixture of smiling, crying and screaming as we all ripped open the dreaded brown envelope.
I headed back to my Dad’s car where he was waiting nervously and read my results once more. A clean sweep of As and A stars. He went back to work beaming as much as I was.
I aced my GCSEs and A Levels at state school and went on to get a First class degree in Economics & Accounting at Bristol University. I won a scholarship at Oxford University and did a Masters in Economics, scoring the highest exam results in my class. I topped it off for good measure with a PhD in Economics. I landed a job as a jet set Strategy Consultant with a prestigious international consultancy firm. Only one in every 1,000 applicants gets a job like this. Without top exam results, my CV would have headed straight to their recycling bin. I can’t say I always dreamt of being a Strategy Consultant. I didn’t even know what a Strategy Consultant was until I became one. But the point is this: when the time came to choose my career, my exam results gave me options. That’s what good exam results give you – currency for buying yourself some options.
I’m extremely proud of my achievements and the truth is, anyone can do it. The reality is I learnt how to work smart and I stuck to a structured revision approach and exam technique that really works. Time and time again I aced my exams and I’m now reaping the benefits. I’m living proof that you don’t have to be a genius to ace your exams.
