Brief Introduction
to Robert Burns
R

obert Burns was born
on the 25th
of January 1759 in a small cottage in Ayrshire, the first of six sons and daughters to William and Agnes Burnes. He was born into what we would now call “abject poverty”, but his family was hard working and they believed in education. Robert, along with his brothers and sisters, was taught at home by his father and a few family friends. They were tutored in the evening, after they had finished working on the farm during the day. Robert was also lucky enough to attend the local school for a few months.
R

obert grew
up working hard on the land and reading avidly. He gained a great interest in poems and songs from his mother and his aunt, who were both well known for singing old Scots songs and retelling old Scottish tales. He first picked up the quill and wrote when he was just 15 years old, the subject of this poem was a girl, ‘handsome Nell’. This innocent, but inspirational gesture, was the first of many great poems and songs that Robert would write in his lifetime.
R

obert became
a father at the age of 26, (with his mothers servant girl, Elizabeth Paton). He went on to have nine children with his wife, Jean Armour, and numerous other children with various different women. Farming didn’t provide nearly enough of an income, so early in Robert’s life he accepted an offer to become a book keeper on a plantation in Jamaica. He needed money to travel and a friend suggested that he should publish his poems to fund the trip.
