Introduction
 
It is virtually impossible to go through life today, or for the last fifteen years for that matter, without hearing the word, “photoshop.”  It has achieved a level of cultural penetration that has been reached by only a few other products, such as Coca Cola and Kleenex.
Photoshop is as likely to be used as a verb as it is a noun and is used in reference to any digital alteration of an image, regardless of the program used to do it, just as any copy was once referred to as a Xerox of the original. 
 
Beyond that, evidence of its massive market penetration is just as ubiquitous.  It is used for everything from falsifying UFO sightings, to memes featuring velociraptors riding great white sharks (while wielding a machine gun of course), to posters for the latest barrage of superhero movies.  
But just what is this thing called Photoshop?  What versions are there?  What features to each have and of course, which is right for you?
 
This guide will help you answer these questions and more.  We’ll be exploring the primary versions of Photoshop currently available, their advantages and disadvantages and which version right for you.
And naturally, we’ll be spending some time exploring the various features available and how to get the most out of them.  And for you beginners out there, we’ll be defining and explaining some of the terms that get tossed around as if everyone automatically knows what they mean. 
That way, the next time someone starts rambling on about layers and filters, you’ll be able to understand what they are talking about.
