Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
1658年，英国神职人员爱德华·拓普塞尔出版了一套皇皇巨著——木刻版画丛书《四足野兽与巨蛇的历史》。
其中一些是城里人或乡村居民都耳熟能详的动物：睡鼠、猫类、海狸。有一些则带有幻想色彩：狮身人面像、拉米亚

、长翅膀的恶龙、蝎狮——一种长着人脸的狮子——以及从不缺席的独角兽。
还有些木刻版画所描绘的野兽对我们现代人来说很熟悉，在17世纪时却十分少见，如河马、犀牛、埃及鳄和长颈鹿，只有少数船员、探险家、服刑罪犯和骗子得以一见。他们为了从中获益和寻欢作乐而向他人提起这些野兽，在酒馆和集市上高谈阔论，或入夜后在卧床边蜡烛的掩映中窃窃私语。他们大肆宣扬，不是为了得到赌金，就是为了证明自己的胆量。那时的人们都很想相信这些，因为对于他们世界还很新鲜，而人生苦短，一对龙翼不知何时会派上用场。
因此，在自然和想象的联结之下，一些闻所未闻的野兽便诞生了。它们被画进书中，因此得以存在。
