引言
　　14:14 我又观看，见有一片白云，云上坐着一位好像人子，头上戴着金冠冕，手里拿着快镰刀。
　　14:15 又有一位天使从殿中出来，向那坐在云上的大声喊着说，伸出你的镰刀来收割。因为收割的时候已经到了，地上的庄稼已经熟透了。
　　14:16 那坐在云上的，就把镰刀扔在地上。地上的庄稼就被收割了。

　　华盛顿。
　　凌晨二点二十二分，阴暗天空中的星辰比此时公路上的汽车还要稀少。斯丹顿公园的一角，一个躺在长椅上的无家可归者在寒风中翻了个身，随手拉拢那辆装着她全部家当的超市购物车，挡住汽车带起的气流。
　　一条野猫轻巧地跑过来，伸出前爪拨弄从购物车钢丝缝隙间露出的塑料袋。声音吵醒了原本就睡得不安稳的购物车主人，她踢了踢购物车，野猫闪电一般窜开，但立刻又悄悄走近。
　　无家可归者骂了一句，自顾自地睡觉。
　　这时，夜空中忽然出现了一个明亮的光点。光点的亮度超过了月亮，躺在长椅上的女人以为有警察在用手电筒照她，抬起头后顿时惊讶地张大了嘴。光点一闪即逝，一道巨大的蓝色光环随后以光点消逝处为中心扩散，离子化气体的弧光像投入水池的石子所激起的涟漪在夜空中扩散，直至完全消失。整个过程就仿佛在天空中忽然有一只蓝色的眼睛眨了一下。
　　“咪”的一声厉叫，野猫逃窜得无影无踪。
　　* * *
　　早上六点，霍始达[Starr Hoffman]醒来时觉得头有点昏昏沉沉的。他匆匆洗完澡走到楼下厨房时，妻子阿琳[Lynn Hoffman]正捧着个草莓酱的玻璃瓶在看电视。
　　“早安，甜心。”霍始达说，“今天天气真好。”
　　“嘘，快看新闻。”阿琳把草莓酱放到餐桌上，然后从冰箱里拿出硬面包圈塞进烤面包机里，最后给他倒了一大杯牛奶。在做这一串动作的时候，她的眼睛始终没离开过冰箱边的小电视。
　　“又是恐怖分子吗？”霍始达心不在焉的坐下，从报纸中抽出体育版来看。红人队的教练辞职……奇才队选秀……他一篇篇地扫着，MSNBC早新闻主持人威廉的声音同时传进他的耳中。
　　“……由于本次事件，正在犹他州参加冬奥会闭幕式的总统已经乘坐空军一号前往亚利桑那的空军基地，并将在那里指挥军事力量。另外，白宫的疏散工作也已完成……喔，我们的记者桑德虏现在采访到了麻省理工高能物理实验室的秦赛力[Cedric Qin]教授，请看画面……”
　　高能物理？霍始达有些错愕地抬起头来，只见电视画面下方赫然打着硕大的醒目字样：“外星人入侵！”
　　“砰”的一声，面包圈跳了出来。阿琳把烤好的焙狗和白脱递给他，喃喃自语地说：“上帝啊，真让人不敢相信。外星人！”
　　秦赛力有一张亚裔的脸孔 ............
