内容简介
曾国藩是一个性格表现多侧面的复杂历史人物。他一手镇压了太平天国革命运动，使腐朽的满清封建王朝延祚了半个世纪，严重阻碍了中国历史的发展。但其为官治学又不无可取之处。本书的特点在于是其所当是而非其所当非，克服了以往在曾国藩问题上绝对肯定或绝对否定的一刀切倾向。全书主要分人生道路与学术思想两部分，而重点在学术思想，概括较全，论述较深，把握较准，于零散中理其脉络，在批判中寻其旨归，录人所未录而发人所未发，既有利于对曾国藩的全面了解，又有助于今日为官为学的借鉴，将曾国藩的研究推向了一个新的阶段。
Abstract
Zeng Guofan(1811—1872)was born to a well-off family in a mountain village in Hu’naru With a dozen years*of diligent study，he passed the highest imperial examination.After that he stayed in Beijing and became a student to Tan Jian，a Confucian scholar.For ten years in Beijing»he had been promoted seven times and became a second-rank official.When Taiping rebels were raging in Hu’nan，he took the imperial decree and organized local militia to suppress the Taiping Rebellion and secure the government of Qing.He was the first scholar to be awarded generalship in Qing Dynasty.He was the governor of Liangjiang and the governor of Zhili.In the capacity of a first-rank official，he promoted the policy of governance by Confucianism and revived Qing for a short period.On the basis of his life stories，the present book attempts to explore his thoughts which include Confucianism,textual criticism,rhetoric and poetics，and social economy.His Confucianism is a synthesis of Confucian scholarships of Han and Song dynasties,centering on the core Confucian principles.His social economy emphasizes utilitarianism；it is therefore reasonable to him that Western technology could be employed to maintain imperial despotism.In late Qing,such an idea was the forerunner of the prevailing claim that Western technology could be used an as an instrument to strengthen China,making him the leader of political and cultural conservatism in pre-modern Chinese history.
